Importing a car from over-seas?

Marco Stolarz: You can't import anything unless it is from before the era of emissions. I'm not sure of the exact year, but it's something like 1968.

Cherlyn Tefera: Every single day we get these questions. You're a hondaman meaning you want to import a cruddy honda civic type r or the like I'd assume. And for the last time you can't afford to have it converted. Unless you're a diplomat...rules are different for diplomats.Besides the shipping and insurance (over 1k under 3k depending on quality of transport) there are A)conversion costs (emissions, safety), B)Storage costs, C)Grease the wheels costs. Conversion costs=I've never heard of a conversion costing under 10k. Storage costs=The car is going to be sitting in port or at the converter for at least 3 months and they will charge you storage fees. Grease the wheels=Even with conversion to get it done faster you have to grease the wheels.Minimal cost=15k. The cost of a new (cruddy) car. The better the car t! he higher the conversion costs. Not that it actually costs them that much to do, that's what they charge you. And before you get ideas about a "home conversion"; you have to be licensed to do said conversion. It stays in port until the conversion is completed and signed off on by the DOT....Show more
