Cons and Pros of a manual car?

Esteban Lyson: less reliable? Coming from somebody who just had a bunch of auto transmission trouble, I'd have to disagree with that. They're way simpler than automatics, and I also disagree that manuals reduce resale value - when I'm looking for a car, I want a 5 speed. I'm also trying to sell a 300zx automatic and people are turned off when they hear it's not a 5 speed....Show more

Gordon Showes: prosbetter gas mileage, longer transmission life, better control of powerconsa pain in bumper to bumper traffic, not everyone can drive it in an emergency, lower resale value, maintenance in the long run, less consistency...Show more

Azzie Trembly: it mostly depends on where ur gonna be driving..ill break it down for u first..a manual car is really fun on the highway when u can feel the power of the car and shift the gears as u like, and that feeling is really awesome, esp if ur a car person..the other thing about manuals are, they usually save on petrol and give u mo! re power coz ur controlling the gears..the downside is,if ur in a really bad traffic jam u might just feel like killing urself(trust me,its bad) and that u wont have a hand free most of the time, coz ur gonna be shiftin and all..an auto car lets u have a hand free most of the time and is easier and more comfortable to drive, but u dont really feel the power of the car and it burns more petrol usually..now,my opinion is that an auto car is better, coz nowadays autos are becoming more powerful and fuel efficient, and shiftronic gearboxes allow u to shift gears up and down when u want..now u have the pros and cons(i hope u understand) if u asked this because u were gonna buy a car,i say buy an automatic mercedes-benz =)...Show more

Melissa Lavallie: Cons:--When you go to sell it, you will have more trouble finding someone who can drive it, much less want to buy it.--If it's under warranty, that warranty will not cover the clutch. It's considered a wear item, like a brake l! ining.--In a snowdrift, you will have a lot more difficulty "r! ocking" the car to get out. You could burn up your clutch (see above).--If you commute in heavy traffic, your left knee may give you trouble from so much clutching and de-clutching.--Studies show that adding those coordination-intensive skills to the normal decision-making and motor activities of driving can cause you to lose concentration and increase your likelihood of having an accident.Pros:--If you use it right, you get better gas mileage.--If you use it right, you get better performance.-- When driving recreationally, you will not have the problem of being in the wrong gear at the wrong time.-- When driving recreationally, you will not have the problem of the transmission shifting for you just when you don't want it to.--If you have friends who know cars, you gain street cred.BTW, the idea that manuals bring less in resale depends on the car, and doesn't always hold up. In any case, I looked up identical used cars on Kelley Blue Book, and the difference did not cove! r the cost of the automatic when you buy the car, so economics favor the manual....Show more

Zora Mazzie: cons... you have to put down your beer eveytime you shift!

Horace Escue: Pros: You control when the car shifts Gas mileage is usually a better (if you shift wisely) A lot less expensive to maintain or replace than an automatic transmission Cons: In traffic you gotta constantly shift gears, specially for stop and go traffic and/or hilly areas. If you miss-shift you might have to say bye to your engine. For example: if your revving high in 2nd gear and you accidentally shift back into 1st and not into 3rd, you can bend the valves, for most people that means time to rebuild the engine or get a new one installed. If you stall, you can run the risk of getting into an accident. Although im sure its pretty rare, it could happen really easily....Show more
