give 5 advantages of computer and internet ?

Robt Heemstra: THERE ARE LOT OF ADVANTAGES OF COMP AND NET...SELECT FROM BELOW WHICH U FEEL ARE GOOD POINTS........Computers and the Internet have changed our lives and even our society since they were first introduced. Computers, in rudimentary form, have been around since the abacus, but computers in the modern sense were first developed around the 1940s. The first well-known computer in the United States was ENIAC, the Electronic Numerical Integrator and Calculator. ENIAC took up an entire room, generated quite a bit of heat, and did much less work than a standard PC or laptop of today. Still, for its time, it was a huge leap forward.Computers progressed from punch-card programming to actual written programs with commands built in. Scientists today are working on computers with "artificial intelligence" that can "think" for themselves within defined limits. This development could have huge advantages. Think of a vacuum cleaner that can identify a dusty spot and go back! to clean it up, or a dishwasher that identifies when the dishes aren’t quite clean, and runs for another five minutes. Computers created the "information age", where huge amounts of data could be processed. This has led to many advantages in modern life, including easily balancing your bank statement or brokerage account, using dictionary and encyclopedia programs, even planning and designing a new house is possible on your computer! There is software available for almost any need, and if you have a notebook or laptop computer, those programs can go anywhere you go. From writing a letter to designing a birthday card, there’s nothing you can’t do with a computer. The Internet has brought even more drastic changes. Using your computer, you can "go online", and access the Worldwide Web (WWW). You can connect to other computers, huge databases, university or county libraries, banks, or your utility company. There’s hardly a bill that can’t be paid online these days â! €" no more licking stamps! If you have a friend or family memb! er living a long distance away, you can contact them by e-mail for free, saving money in long-distance charges. Movies, songs, and games can be downloaded via the Internet to your computer, and many of them are free, as well. Do your banking online at 2am, or take an online class in math or basket weaving. The Internet has truly revolutionized how we connect with other people, as well as businesses. There’s not one area of our lives that computers and the Internet have not affected. While there are things to watch out for, overall most people agree that the huge advantages that have come from computers and the Internet far outweigh any disadvantages....Show more

Emile Okafor: 1. This bill wouldn't give the President the power to "shut down the Internet", just the portion of the network located within the US. 2. This is the most effective way we currently have of preventing a sophisticated, coordinated Cyber-terrorism attack on our network infrastructure. If Al Qaeda ! ever managed to recruit just a couple decent hackers (most Muslims suck with computers), they could potentially screw us up in a big, BIG way. Imagine all our financial records being wiped out, our communications disabled, the safety measures of our power plants over-ridden and our missile safeguards compromised... It seems like Science Fiction, but I assure you; it's completely possible. No computer or network is completely secure. Any system can be compromised. Consider this to be Star Wars Missile Defense for the Internet. I'm no fan of expansive, invasive Government; but I prefer this to Al Qaeda sending us back to the 18th Century with a couple keystrokes. And for the record, I'm not just saying this as a parrot for the Democrat Party. I would support ANY President having this power. Bush, Obama, Clinton, McCain, Palin...whoever. The President is responsible for defending the US and this is the best way we have of protecting our tech-reliant nation in the event of an e! mergency. EDIT: To the fellow quoting Benjamin Franklin, Ben was a smar! t guy, but he never foresaw anything like the Internet, nor how much we would come to depend on it. This isn't a sacrifice of rights for safety. Its just safety. Period....Show more
