Fermin Tara: Its completely normal to freak out a little over going abroad. You're talking about exposing yourself to something completely new and different so its understandable to be nervous. You can combat this by being prepared. Read blogs of other people studying abroad, read up on where you're going, and talk to your family and friends about it who can support you along the way.With that being said I think you should do it. You have the opportunity and its only for four months which is actually not very long, so you can definitely handle it.Of course, I also want to be realistic and say that while its an amazing experience its not always meant for everything. After studying abroad for a year I have definitely seem the whole spectrum from people who don't want to leave and actually do ! come back after graduating to people who just miss their home and family so much that the experience is no longer worth it and they go home early. Its really most of the times to predict what kind of predicament you'll find yourself in but it just depends on how prepared you are and what kind of attitude you have about it.Also, Skype is every study abroad students best friend. I talk to my parents at least once a week that way and even have Skype credit so I can call my friends phones or get in contact with my parents in an emergency.But know that what kind of experience you have is all up to you. Only do it if you really think it would benefit you and that you can handle it. Two of my children were in SE, and I think! both gained a lot from it. Both my kids were given extra time for exams, which was appropriate because they were LD, Both were able to pass exams that otherwise they would fail. In the same token they actually obsorbed the info because of the extra time allotted. I was lucky in that this particular school had teachers who up held the policies of the SE program. The program itself is is more than adequate, but you need those admonistrators and teachers to impliment the different aspects available to parents and children. The information is freely available as it is for any other field of study. But, it takes time, effort and a reason to access the information, read it and make sense of it. If you are a parent who is just being told that your child needs special education services, your first words are probably, "Oh, no! There isn't anything wrong with my child." Then you try to say things like, "He''ll just grow out of it," and "She just needs more time to develop." The last thing you want is your child to be different, and special education o! ften means "different education." We as a society seem programed to wan! t everyone to be the same. When I was in school I did have to do things my classmates did not have to do because they had no reason to use alternate methods. But, now as an adult and teacher, no one even notices my deformity until I must use an alternative method to move my arm. But, the thing is that I function and function well. Bernie Cerra: The IDEA was most recently revised in 2004. It has been revised, I believe twice since 1990. The biggest problem comes from school district staff not knowing and/or not following the law. If they are the head of the IEP team, they should have a good working knowledge of the IDEA, ADA, Section 504, and about 10 other laws that apply. It's too bad that the parent must become the expert and teach the school district what the law is in so many cases.As a professional in the field of special education, I am very aware of what the laws are, what the limits are, and that many school districts don't try to be inventive within those limits to find the most appropriate plan for the individual student. Obviously, you have some very young children there but their active interest and motivation is a guarantee factor about learning not only during the visit but also before. It involves communicational skills, working in group, planning the visit, what to see, how to go, what they need to bring (food, cameras, their scetch book etc...! ). They can also discuss about their previous experiences going on excursions with friends/family /school. Since they are too young to know about all the possibilities which may actually involve some practical yet important details you could make some few suggestions trying to describe different locations in an equal way not to show your own preference or raise high expectations. It is not about what they see it is how deeply there are going to be involved in the experience. You could maybe start by narrating them a story about a group of children who decided to go out for a walk and bring back stories or material they were going to find in that walk to their favorite toys who couldn't or wouldn't come with them. Or in order to send a letter to children from another school in another state or country so that the other children can see what is nice around where they live. Maybe at the begginning there are going to be many ideas that can not be implemented and this is where ! you intervene by giving out information on why this plan can n! ot be scheduled for the moment. It is important to encourage all childen to say what they think and try not to put things on vote, if possible. Something like 'things fun around where we live' or 'things fun to see' might make a better starting point than the plain 'let us decide'.It doesn't need to be something big neccessarily; it can be something as simple as to ' meet a tree' (personally I like much Cornell's suggestions in books like 'Sharing the joy of nature', Dawn publications or other similar stuff) but definately any other part of their social environment or monuments and museums are great too as long as children are actively involved in the process before, during and after the experience. In my area, it is really hard to find a non-church run preschool for 3 year olds. The county actually offers some preschools for 4 and 5 year old kids (not free) as the preschool run by the school district is restricted to those children who are at risk (poverty, preemies, slow development).

Deangelo Marchak: He's a young 3 but it won't hurt for a few days a week in a half day program for the play and socialization skills that he can learn. If it's an academic preschool then it really depends on him and his abilities. Being a young 3 he may not be able to do all the things older 3's can at the same time. If you have concerns about it I would talk to the teachers and director about them and find out more about their curriculum and preschool procedures. Usually if they know up fro! nt and know you're willing to work with him at home on things he needs to they will work with you at most places to make it successful for the child. Give it a shot and if it just doesn't click well you can always pull him out and wait a year and try again or work with him at home in addition to finding a good play group once a week or other program for children that are his age for peer interaction.My son was 2 and did a preschool program with him as well as a few other activities for kids his age at our church. He was an only child and I wanted it for social aspects for him with kids his age group more than anything. They did do some teaching and lessons there but he wasn't learning anything because he knew most of what they were doing all ready. We kept the additional activities going for him but pulled him out at the end of the first quarter from preschool and worked with him at home. He took off and learned his colors, all the geometric shapes by sight and name, cou! nts to 20 and knows about half his alphabet. We recently bought plants to start a vegetable garden in our yard this summer so he can learn about how plants grow and help pick the vegetables when they are ready to eat. Omar Phipps: Whether or not you are accepted being home schooled really depends on several factors. Granted, some people who didn't come up in a traditional high school don't do well in the military. But at the same time, some people who didn't finish high school did great. I had Soldiers who had associates degrees who were chaptered out within their first year in the Army. I also had a CSM who retired at 30 years but entered the Army with a GED. I don't play that game where I lump all people who didn't get a traditional high school diploma in the same area and call them unfit for the military.The fact of the matter is is that the Army usually looks at being home schooled as a Tier 2, which is similar to a GED. Does that mean you can't enlist? Not exactly. What has to happen is that everything you have done so far with your schooling has to be given to the recruiter. From there, the recruiter's station commander forwards it up to his battalion educ! ation specialist and they will evaluate it. Depending on the evaluation, you will come out as either a Tier 1 (High School Grad, HS Senior, or 15+ semester hours of college) or a Tier 2 (GED, Special Education, etc...).If you are considered a Tier 1 then you can enlist right away. If you're considered a Tier 2 then you will need to enroll into a local or online college that has 100-level courses and get 15 semester hours of college. If you enroll into a physical class you can enlist as soon as you are enrolled as long as you get a school letter stating when you will have 15 semester hours accumulated. Your ship date won't be until after you finish your last class and if you don't finish your classes your contract will be voided. We have a home schooled kid in my platoon right now whom is getting kicked out because he has trouble dealing with other people and communication and whom also never experimented with drugs in high school so started doing them in the army after finding out what weed was.
