Why are so many people against Special education? Do people really know what it it and the limits it has?

Kalyn Proietto: I believe people are against Special Education because of how is sounds. I believe people dont like what they don't understand. Children who are in Special Ed. are just the same children in regular education. Yes some of the need help with things but children are children. I work in Special Edcation and my studens are just like everybody else. I believe its not the children who need to change it people attitude toward Special Education.

Amada Greising: If special education laws would be followed by the schools and implemented correctly and legally, then many more parents would not be 'against' special education. But, from my experience and in being a member of many parent groups, message boards, email lists, support groups, etc I have found that MOST schools all over the US are CORRUPT when it comes to special education. They ALL say 'they don't have enough money' to help a child thru sped services. But, federal sped law IDEA states schools are NOT! suppose to use lack of funds from providing services.AND, there is a website that shows how much special ed funds schools GIVE BACK to state and federal deparment of education. So they can not use lack of funds as an excuse. Most parents don't even know they have laws to protect them and their children. Most parents trust the school and think they are doing right. But when the parent learns the special ed laws and find out the school has been screwing them all along, THEN the PARENT is considered the BAD ONE.But, schools can keep right on violating FEDERAL laws, cause low self esteem in children, be blatantly hostile toward parents and children, BECAUSE THEY CAN.There is NO ENFORCEMENT to make sure schools follow the laws concerniing special education. And schools KNOW this, so their crap will continue....Show more

Jonathan Schlussel: Like you onsinuated, People don't know enough abouy it. To mention a positive aspect to Special Ed, I'd like to bring up my experoenc! e with special Ed. Two of my children were in SE, and I think! both gained a lot from it. Both my kids were given extra time for exams, which was appropriate because they were LD, Both were able to pass exams that otherwise they would fail. In the same token they actually obsorbed the info because of the extra time allotted. I was lucky in that this particular school had teachers who up held the policies of the SE program. The program itself is is more than adequate, but you need those admonistrators and teachers to impliment the different aspects available to parents and children. We also need to take the stogma of labeling children by dicussing the program more thus making it more accessable to people who need it but are afraid to get involved in it....Show more

Romana Stiman: What do you mean by special education? My belief is that it is where a child has support because they need special requirements. I am Blind and have recieved special education from the Department of Ed. since I was in Kindergarten and would no! t have been able to get through school without it. I think they do a great job but I must admit it would be a very demanding job and at times stressful. I don't know of anyone who is against it and I agree with you. But I also think that it takes a specific kind of person to do the job....Show more

Rona Espalin: I really like this question. People who are not directly involved in the educational process do not know the special education system. The information is freely available as it is for any other field of study. But, it takes time, effort and a reason to access the information, read it and make sense of it. If you are a parent who is just being told that your child needs special education services, your first words are probably, "Oh, no! There isn't anything wrong with my child." Then you try to say things like, "He''ll just grow out of it," and "She just needs more time to develop." The last thing you want is your child to be different, and special education o! ften means "different education." We as a society seem programed to wan! t everyone to be the same. If everyone wears, eats and learns the same things the same way no one has to be the odd one. But, special education is not about that. It is about helping a person use every resource available to learn and succeed in life. I was born with physical deformities. I am a product of special education. I had to learn different ways to move my right arm and wrist. I had to learn to compensate for my diminished range of motion and hearing problems. When I was in school I did have to do things my classmates did not have to do because they had no reason to use alternate methods. But, now as an adult and teacher, no one even notices my deformity until I must use an alternative method to move my arm. But, the thing is that I function and function well. Special education and related therapies offered to me because of the ground breaking IDEA legislation made it available and financially possible for my parents. Education is to help each person become self-s! ufficient. That worthy goal can be reached in infinate ways. Special education, done right, helps people find the right way for them.It isn't important that the world understand why a person can't use traditional methods to grow and learn. What is important is that the non-disabled recognize the right of each person to have a fair chance at learning to survive and be well....Show more

Mack Ukich: AMEN!! You are so right!. I have three special needs children, and I can relate to what you are saying. People are scared at what they don't know or understand. People don't like to be scared so they say things about special ed without know the true facts. Educating people is the key. When we were young kids in special ed were kept in a room, and never interacted with typical students. Now times are changing special ed kids do a lot more within a typical classroom. I believe as these first and second graders get older, they will have a better understanding and no fear of any! child with special needs. We just need to educate their parents....Sho! w more

Bernie Cerra: The IDEA was most recently revised in 2004. It has been revised, I believe twice since 1990. The biggest problem comes from school district staff not knowing and/or not following the law. If they are the head of the IEP team, they should have a good working knowledge of the IDEA, ADA, Section 504, and about 10 other laws that apply. It's too bad that the parent must become the expert and teach the school district what the law is in so many cases. As a professional in the field of special education, I am very aware of what the laws are, what the limits are, and that many school districts don't try to be inventive within those limits to find the most appropriate plan for the individual student. When it does happen, it's like magic! :)...Show more
