Mental Health, Nature or Nurture?

Devon Kalberer: Lol. Okay, some mental health problems CAN b e genetic, but most probably she wont have issues.Nobody can predict what the human mind will do, though, all you can do is watch for red flag signs (but don't be too obvious, please, that will CREATE problems)Just take it like she's a normal kid, because she is....Show more

David Boehler: There is both a genetic and a behavioral component to depression - that is, both nature AND nurture. If your daughter has a genetic predisposition to depression because she got that gene from her father, then she may be more likely to experience it in the future. Environmental triggers also have a lot to do with depression, and it's been shown through studies that being raised in an unstable, negative environment makes a child more likely to grow up to experience depression. On the flip side, growing up in a stable, loving, affirming environment can act as a "buffer" against developing depression in the future, even if! the child has a biological predisposition towards the disease because of a parent being affected. There is such a complex connection between biological and environmental factors in mental health disorders, there's no way to know whether or not your daughter will suffer in the future because her father has depression. She may not have even inherited the gene from him in the first place! And even if she has, growing up in a positive environment can really help protect her from ever having to deal with it in the future.I would say that the best thing you can do is just keep doing what you're doing. Give her a happy childhood full of love, affirmation, acceptance, and joy. Keep an open relationship with her so that she can always come to you with her problems, including emotional ones. That way even if she DOES start feeling depressed in the future, she will be able to talk to you about it and you will be able to help her appropriately before it gets to the point of hospitaliz! ation.Good luck, and God bless....Show more

Chastity Dod! erer: Well I can only speak for my experience as well as what i observed with my brother. from my point of view on both of our situation it was definitely NURTURE or should I say lack there of. we had a TERRIBLE childhood

Bryant Chaudhry: Studies have shown:That when a child whose parent has schizophrenia is raised in a stable loving environment the child is at no greater risk for developing schizophrenia! However if the child is raised in an unstable environment there is a significant chance of developing schizophrenia. (something like 40%?)Now I understand depression is a different type of mental illness, but I beleive the same logic can be applied to your situation. It is partially genetic, but if you raise your daughter well she is not more likely to develop her father's mental illness. You may want to do preventative therapy, mabye talk to a psychologist (a good one, Phd.) share your concerns, ask what specifically you must do for your daughter (ie mabye raisi! ng her to be more self-confident and socially adept by trying to get her into group activities like sports)...Show more

Alisia Sutphen: More often than not "mental illness" is nature. Neurologists and psychiatrists do what is interpretive science which is not science at all. A true scientist also includes data that goes against his theory, beliefs and thesis. Pscyhiatry takes test like mri's pet scans and only use the data that supports their theory. when they find instances when results do not support their theory they leave it out of their conclusions. real science is like H2+0=water 100% of the time. and you have to remember that drug companies have a huge sway and big bucks for psychiatric research that favors the drug companies....btw, did you know, for example that simply listening to your mp3 or personal stereo player for awhile will reduce auditory hallucinations?...Show more
